The £90,000 threshold explained

This is the Mandatory VAT Registration Threshold for 2025/26. It applies to your total VAT-taxable turnover (essentially all your sales) in any rolling 12-month period. If you hit £90k, you must register within 30 days. Voluntary registration below this threshold is also possible.

How Etsy handles VAT for you

Since July 2021, Etsy collects and remits VAT on sales to UK buyers on behalf of sellers (under the Online Sales Marketplace rules). This means Etsy adds VAT to your buyer's checkout and pays it to HMRC. You do NOT charge VAT separately. This applies even if you're VAT registered.

Selling direct (not through Etsy)

If you sell through your own website, at markets, or B2B, and you are VAT registered, you must charge 20% VAT on sales to UK consumers. For B2B sales to VAT-registered UK businesses, both parties can use the normal input/output VAT mechanism.

What "zero-rated exports" means

Sales to customers outside the UK are zero-rated for VAT purposes. You charge 0% VAT, but the sale still counts toward your £90k threshold. EU buyers may face import VAT in their own country — that's their responsibility, not yours.

Reverse charge for B2B digital services

If you sell digital files (STLs) to VAT-registered businesses in the EU, the reverse charge mechanism applies. You don't charge VAT; the buyer accounts for it in their own country. Include "VAT reverse charge applies" on your invoice.

Etsy managing VAT on your behalf is a significant benefit. It means most Etsy-only sellers don't need to think about VAT until they hit the £90k threshold — at which point your whole business structure probably needs reviewing anyway.

Warning: The £90,000 threshold applies to ALL your taxable sales combined — not just 3D printing. If you have other income streams, add them together when tracking your threshold position.
