Retraction Settings Calculator

Select your printer and filament to get recommended retraction distance and speed starting points - plus a tuning guide to eliminate stringing.

Your Setup

ℹ️ Bambu uses firmware retraction and auto-calibrates. In Bambu Studio, set retraction to 0.8-1.0mm as a starting point for PLA.

Recommended starting settings - Direct Drive · PLA

Retraction distance

0.5-1.0mm

Start at 0.5mm, increase by 0.5mm until stringing stops

Retraction speed

25-45mm/s

Start at 45mm/s - reduce if you hear clicking

💡 PLA strings easily - start at the low end and increase by 0.5mm until stringing stops.

Retraction tuning guide

Retraction settings interact with print temperature, speed, and part cooling. Tune in this order:

  1. 1Dry your filament: Wet filament causes stringing that retraction cannot fix. Dry for 4-8 hrs at 45-65°C before tuning.
  2. 2Set print temperature correctly: Higher temperatures increase stringing. Try reducing temp by 5°C if stringing persists after retraction tuning.
  3. 3Print a retraction tower: Print a stringing test (e.g. two towers) with varying retraction distance. Start at the low value above and increase by 0.5mm per test.
  4. 4Check for grinding: If you hear clicking or see filament dust, retraction distance is too high. Reduce by 0.5mm.
  5. 5Tune speed: Once distance is set, try reducing speed if under-extrusion appears after travel moves.

FAQ

Why is Bowden retraction higher than direct drive?

Bowden printers have a gap between the extruder and hotend. The filament must move further to relieve pressure in the melt zone. Direct drive has a very short path so less retraction is needed.

Can too much retraction cause problems?

Yes. Over-retraction pulls molten filament back into the heat break, causing clogs. It can also grind soft filaments like TPU. Always tune upward gradually.

Why does PETG need less retraction than PLA?

PETG is more viscous and sticky. High retraction causes gaps and under-extrusion after travel moves. PETG stringing is better controlled with temperature reduction and wipe/coasting settings.

Does Bambu Lab need retraction calibration?

Bambu auto-calibrates retraction via firmware. The values in Bambu Studio are a starting point. For third-party filament on a custom profile, manual tuning at 0.8-1.2mm is recommended.
